OpenAI · Rolled out globally October 7, 2026
GPT-6
OpenAI's flagship, rolled out globally in ChatGPT on October 7, 2026 with the new Intelligent UI. Paid tiers first; ChatGPT's free tier remains the free way into the family.
Best for: people deciding whether this model's paid plan is worth it — and looking for the free way into the same family.
What it costs
ChatGPT paid plans (Plus and above) get the full experience; free-tier availability varies by feature and region.
What it is
GPT-6 is OpenAI's newest flagship model, rolled out globally in ChatGPT on October 7, 2026 alongside a redesigned assistant experience OpenAI calls Intelligent UI. OpenAI published its GPT-6 family model guide in the same week, positioning it for complex coding, research, and data-analysis work — the tasks the GPT line has been steadily consolidating.
The rollout was not entirely smooth sailing: Reuters reported in late September that OpenAI shelved GPT-6.1 Astra — a more ambitious next-generation variant planned for October — after internal safety testing flagged concerns. A cheaper variant, GPT-6.1 Sol, went ahead for cost-sensitive workloads, and the previous GPT-5.5 is being retired from ChatGPT as of mid-October.
For everyday users the model family remains reachable without payment: ChatGPT's free tier continues, with the newest flagship features landing on Plus and higher plans first. Developers can prototype against OpenAI-compatible endpoints through free-tier gateways before paying per token.
The free way into this family
ChatGPT's free tier still works at no cost with the GPT family — newest-flagship features arrive on paid plans first, and Google AI Studio is a free place to compare against Gemini.
