Descript
Descript
Best for: Productivity for people who want a checked, free option.
Descript treats editing like a document: your recording becomes a transcript, and cutting a sentence from the text cuts it from the audio or video. It handles podcasts, YouTube, and screen recordings, with studio-grade audio cleanup and AI voices under the same roof.
The free plan includes 1 transcription hour (60 media minutes) per month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p watermark-free audio export, and unlimited audio-only export duration. Paid Hobbyist ($16/month annual) raises media hours to 10; Creator ($24) adds 4K and unlimited stock.
It fits podcasters, YouTubers, and anyone who thinks in paragraphs rather than timelines — the text-first model is genuinely faster for talk-heavy content.
To begin, download Descript or use the web version, drag in one recording, and cut a few filler words from the transcript. That's the demo that sells it.
The honest limits. Free AI credits are one-time; video export carries a watermark beyond the basics on some tiers; the free 1 hour/month is thin for weekly podcasts. Overdub voice cloning needs consent and paid plans. Not used first-hand; confirm at descript.com/pricing.
