Elicit
Elicit
Best for: Research & Reference for people who want a checked, free option.
Elicit is built for one job: academic literature work. It searches more than 138 million papers, summarizes what it finds, screens studies against your criteria, and pulls data into comparison tables — the mechanical half of a systematic review, done in minutes.
The free Basic plan is unusually generous for research tooling: unlimited search across the corpus, unlimited summaries, unlimited chat with papers that have full text, and Zotero export. The paid Pro ($49/month annual) unlocks systematic-review screening at 5,000 papers and custom extractions.
It fits graduate students, clinicians, and researchers whose bottleneck is reading 80 papers to keep 12 — and who need citations they can actually check.
To begin, ask a plain question at elicit.com and inspect the sources column first; Elicit links every claim to the paper it came from.
The honest limits. Free usage of the research agent and reports is capped; heavy screening workflows are Pro. AI extraction still needs spot-checking against the actual PDFs before it goes in anything serious. Not used first-hand; confirm at elicit.com/pricing.
